WAVE MEMBERS NEEDED TO ADVOCATE FOR LGBTQ STUDENTS: After our success lobbying the Capistrano Unified School District to protect the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) clubs on its campuses, WAVE has been asked to help lobby the Saddleback Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) to allow GSAs on its campuses. A student, Liv, has been trying to start a GSA. She has been told that the club is not allowed because only academic clubs are allowed. After a long, frustrating, hard-fought battle, SVUSD is set to change their district-wide club policies at the middle school and high school levels to include all clubs – regardless of whether they are viewed as academic or not. They will also develop a streamlined way for proposing new clubs and an official process for approving or denying them. This action will be done in closed session during the Board’s next meeting. We are looking to get a celebratory crowd of people wearing purple to support Liv, Rancho Santa Margarita Intermediate School’s new GSA, and the action the board is taking. We need to let Liv know that we are proud of her and let the board know that we are aware of the issue. Thurs., Feb 8th, SVUSD Education Center Board Room, 25631 Peter A. Hartman Way, Mission Viejo 92691.
Liv’s mom will be speaking during public comment. You might consider doing the same if:
- You want to commend Liv on her advocate spirit
- You are a student or family member of a student in SVUSD
- You can speak about the importance of an inclusive school environment for all students – specifically the importance of LGBTQ education and inclusion
- You can speak about the negative effects of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric
We do not know if opponents are aware of this issue and/or if they will be present at the meeting. Please attend the meeting and speak from a place of love, respect, education, positivity, support, and understanding.
