SPEAK OUT for OC Youth

Speak OUT and support the California Healthy Youth Act for ALL STUDENTS in Orange County!
The California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA), which took effect in January 2016, requires school districts to provide students with age-appropriate, medically accurate, and unbiased comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education at least twice - once (5 hours) in middle school and once (5 hours) in high school.
Anti-LGBT and religious extremist lobbying and legal groups have been campaigning to prevent the implementation of CHYA in school districts across Orange County under the guise of “parental rights.” These lobbying and legal groups include the Pacific Justice Institute, who has been designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-LGBT hate group, as well as Capitol Resource Institute, Church United, and Tyler and Burch.
These anti-LGBT efforts are being championed by a number of Orange County school board Trustees including the current president of the Orange County Board of Education, Dr. Ken Williams (please see bio:, who passed a resolution to hold a “community forum” where experts and community members from “both sides of CHYA” could have a public discussion.
However, there not “two sides” to this law and the state of California has not asked the county education boards to provide testimony, give evidence, or offer any information in relation to opposition of the law, nor has the state of California left any interpretation of the law up to anyone at the county level.
Despite the objections of large numbers of community members and community leaders, Dr. Williams intends to hold this forum which will be an opportunity for more of the same anti-LGBT rhetoric and misinformation that is creating a hostile environment surrounding CHYA and its impending implementation. This forum will not provide the education about CHYA that will benefit the community but instead will promote and embolden hate and bigotry.
We have agreed that we will not support this forum because it promotes bias against LGBT people, creates a hostile environment, causes psychological pain to the LGBT community, and emboldens bullying, discrimination and violence against LGBT youth…exactly what CHYA seeks to combat.
Please join Orange County parents, students, and community members along with faith leaders, school leaders, and organizations including the LGBTQ Center of OC, Planned Parenthood of Orange County and San Bernardino, ACLU, Anti-Defamation League, and many more in a counter-assembly and SPEAK OUT for LGBTQIA+ youth. Future generations of Orange County youth are counting on us!
